Top 5 Tips for Winning Government Grants

Business Funding Tips : Sourced from Australian Business Financing Centre

While winning government grants and loans may not be as hard as you think, it takes some know-how, says James Byrne, Director of the Australia Business Financing Centre (ABFC).

Here are 5 grant-winning tips James says will increase your chances of receiving that government grant or loan.

1.   When you find a funding program that suits your purpose, don't stop searching. Look for other possible funding opportunities as well. Search both state and federal funding programs offering funds to new entrepreneurs.

2.   Think outside the square. The Australian federal and state governments can sometimes be a little mysterious, and a department that may seem to have no relation to your business may just be the right place to look. For example, you may think the Department of Agriculture is funding water-drilling programs on remote properties, but then discover it's the Sustainable Energy Development Office.

3.   If at first you don't succeed, try again. While you may not receive funding from a particular agency, you may be able to simply adapt your existing proposal and apply for funding through another state or federal agency.

4.   Talk with key contacts responsible for approving grants. By establishing personal contacts within the particular agencies overseeing government programs, you may find yourself in the right place at the right time. They may solicit projects from you, let you in on upcoming programs, or introduce you to key contacts within other agencies.

5.   Improvise. Even if you're not eligible for government funding yourself, you may still be able to profit from a particular program. For example, you may be able to help a non-profit organisation apply for funding that will in turn allow them to hire you for a particular project.
