Two Bayswater finalists in WorkSafe Awards

Two Knox businesses were finalists in the 2017 WorkSafe Victoria Awards: Viewscape and Branach.

Open to Victorians in any industry, the awards have nine categories and celebrate everything from individual achievements to business solutions and inventions.

Viewscape in Bayswater is one of Australia's leading custom-made blind manufacturers and a respected, independent, privately owned business.

Also in Bayswater, Branach is a multiaward- winning designer, manufacturer and exporter of ladders, which have become a benchmark for safety around the world.

Brendan Hogan, General Manager of Viewscape, said it was rewarding to be recognised by WorkSafe Victoria in the category, Best Solution to a Manual handling Issue.

“Our eight-person health and safety committee put their heads together to find a solution to moving heavy rolls of fabric, which was previously done by workers picking them up and putting them into trays and bays by themselves.

“So we developed a trolley and cradle solution, which will prevent soft tissue injuries and make our lives safer. It’s also more efficient so it’s a better way all round.” A finalist in the OHS Invention/ Achievement of the Year category, Branach invented a Modular Ladder System with Fall Control.

Branach leads the industry in designing and manufacturing innovative height safety solutions with its latest invention set to go into production in its Bayswater factory in early 2018.

The new ladder system provides the user with a small compact ladder that can be extended to 7.6 metres high with the insertion of modular sections. It has a levelling and stabilising system called the Terrain Master and provides two options of fall control.

Mike Walsh, a Branach Founder and Director, said, “Inspiration for the system came to fruition when Downer Communications asked us to find a safer way for their technicians to work at heights.” “Our design team had already been working on a stabilising  system so we applied futuristic thinking but for today’s applications.

The journey has taken us three years and we are looking forward to starting production in the new year.” The statistics from falls from heights are seriously alarming with the trauma impacting not only the height worker and their family but everyone  ssociated with them.

“Branach has a longstanding commitment to safety and a proud history of designing innovative equipment to prevent falls and injury while working at heights.

We are thrilled to be a finalist in the Worksafe Awards, which are highly regarded within the industry,” Mike added.
