What permits or registrations do you need from Council?

Planning: A planning permit may be required to operate a home business, change the use of the land/building, add signage or other external building modifications and to trade liquor. Other factors where you may need a planning permit based on the zone, overlays and relevant planning policies of your business’ location. Depending on your requirements, whether the advice of other responsible authorities is required and notification periods (if applicable), the process could be lengthy, so allow sufficient time for approvals.

Environmental Health: A Health Registration will be required for businesses involving the sale of food, hair & beauty, health, tobacco, prescribed accommodation and where septic systems are used.

Building A Building: Permit may be required when your building will be structurally altered or modified internally (including changes that may impact safety). Other factors to consider are whether you will operate a swimming pool or spa as part of the business activity or if your business is a hospitality business that caters for more than 20 patrons. The Building Permit could also have several requirements e.g. structural (beams and pillars), amenities, and accessibility (wheelchair access and ramps).

Local Laws: A Local Laws permit may be required to approve animal businesses, portable signage, outdoor dining and goods for sale or displays on Council land.
